Philodendron radiatum

Philodendron radiatum is a climbing Araceae species from Mexico to Colombia. Young plants can carry simpler leaves, while mature climbing growth develops deeply divided blades with radiating segments.

The mature leaf form appears gradually as the stem gains height on support. Bright indirect light, warmth, steady moisture and an airy root zone help the plant move from juvenile foliage into its more divided adult shape.

Philodendron radiatum juvenile leaves and mature divided blades

  • Family: Araceae, the aroid family.
  • Leaf development: Juvenile leaves are simpler than the mature divided blades.
  • Mature foliage: Adult leaves develop deep cuts and radiating segments.
  • Growth habit: Wet-tropical climber that grows best on a stable pole or board.
  • Range: Native from Mexico to Colombia.
  • Indoor growth: Mature leaf division takes time, vertical support, bright indirect light and an airy substrate.
  • Growth rate: Usually moderate in warm, bright, humid conditions, with slower growth during cooler darker periods.

How young Philodendron radiatum leaves become divided

Philodendron radiatum shifts from simpler juvenile blades to deeply divided adult leaves. Early foliage can stay plain while the plant is still young, and stronger segmentation appears as the climbing stem matures.

In habitat, Philodendron radiatum grows in wet tropical forest, where climbing stems develop in warm, humid, filtered-light conditions. Indoors, a vertical support gives the stem a stable route upward and helps the divided leaves expand with less crowding.

Philodendron radiatum care for divided climbing growth

  • Light: Bright indirect light supports steady growth without scorching the divided blades.
  • Water: Water when the upper part of the substrate has started to dry; heavy wet soil can damage the roots.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity keeps expanding divided leaves from catching or tearing during unfurling.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and stable, with protection from cold draughts.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky, airy aroid mix that drains quickly but does not dry out completely between waterings.
  • Support: A moss pole, board or similar vertical surface keeps the stem upright as it lengthens.
  • Space: Leave room around the support so mature divided blades do not rub against walls or neighbouring plants.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot, the mix has compacted or the support no longer suits the stem height.
  • Fertilising: Feed lightly during active growth; reduce feeding when growth slows.
  • Propagation: Root stem cuttings with at least one node in warm humid conditions and an airy propagation medium.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged leaves at the petiole base or shorten an overlong stem above a healthy node.
  • Semi-hydroponics: Semi-hydro is possible with adapted roots and a clean, oxygenated mineral substrate.

Leaf damage, simple leaves and root stress in Philodendron radiatum

  • Simple leaves: Juvenile plants and unsupported stems often produce less divided foliage.
  • Mechanical damage: Deeply cut blades can tear where they rub against hard surfaces or neighbouring plants.
  • Root rot: Dense wet substrate can cause yellowing, weak growth and root loss.
  • Leaf scorch: Direct sun can mark the thin edges of divided mature leaves.
  • Pests: Inspect new leaves, petioles and leaf undersides for thrips, spider mites, mealybugs and scale.

Philodendron radiatum toxicity for pets and children

Philodendron radiatum contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and small children, especially where leaves or stems could be chewed.

Botanical background of Philodendron radiatum

Philodendron was published by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode 3: 780 in 1829, and the genus name comes from Greek-derived roots meaning “tree-loving.” Philodendron radiatum was described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott and published in Oesterreichisches Botanisches Wochenblatt 3:378 in 1853. The epithet radiatum means radiating or ray-like, referring to the mature leaf divisions that spread from the blade.

A climbing Philodendron with juvenile-to-adult leaf change, deeply divided mature blades and a radiating leaf outline on support.

good hose
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 25-Foot
I installed it about 2 weeks ago, after reading negative reviews, I was prepared for the worse. I did as instructed, kept the thermostat sensor next to the water source and plugged both ends, however the middle of the body of the house was lightly still coiled. When I tried, the water was leaking from under the insulation, where connected to the water source, just as I saw it in the negative reviews. Then I remembered, the instruction clearly say, the house must be uncoiled, so I disconnected, and stretched it out completely in a straight line taking out any kinks, then I took the ends and plugged them in the outlet and inlet. Tested it again and NO LEAK, it works perfectly. That night, it was 25F degrees, the hose was warm to the touch and no leak (the pressure in my sink faucet doubled, I suppose my old hose was not as efficient as new one, etc...). So, it works. I must say, that the instructions, indicate that the heating element turns on below 50F degrees, my hose. turns on when it it is below 35F roughly, which is fine.

A company that stands behind its product
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 50-Foot
I bought one of these hoses at the end of January and it worked great right off the bat. However, fast forward to beginning of this month and the hose itself had failed, leaking water. I was out of Amazon's warranty window, so reached out to Camco directly for guidance on how to get it replaced. Fast forward a week and there's a brand new replacement hose delivered right to my door. Easy communication, fast turnaround and no questions asked (granted, the photos I provided were pretty clear as to the issue). So sure, its not ideal that the first one failed but in a world where it can be difficult to find a reliable brand - I feel very secure working with these guys and they earned my confidence. Hose works great btw. No issues with the connections leaking, water quality, or temperature. This is the one I'd buy again if/when I have to.

Great idea, but the quality control..
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 25-Foot
*TLDR, Too Long Didn't Read* Do Not waste your money. Failed right out of box. Leaked at above freezing temps With upstream pressure regulator. Did not test the heating feature due to the hose leaking from under the insulation sleeve somewhere. Very disappointed. Build your own or insulate well. If you do choose to take a gamble with this item then Thoroughly test it as soon as it arrives and take pics/ video. Would share the video but it won't upload correctly, (not too tech savvy), but I know plumbing, mechanical, etc. The long review: Other reviews have mentioned the hose leaking or failing Even with pressure regulators (which we use and replace regularly) - this is factual. Failed on first hookup Before it reached the freezing temps. Please Do Not Buy this sub par constructed item. It's a shame really since we have bought a lot of Camco branded items over the years. Our unit seemed ok out of the box (bought on sale weeks before the cold season and didn't need it til about 6 days after the return window closed). I should have tested as soon as it arrived but Optimistically Trusted with the 'name brand' mindset. Amazon was courteous, but did not do anything for us except refer us to Camco to try to get them to replace the defective hose. Take our hard learned lesson and many others and Do Not buy these products. Either research youtube for making one from scratch yourself or over insulate your water lines/ hoses and set everything to drip during sub freezing temps (mostly applying to full time rvers or camping in colder climates). We bought the 1in diameter 1/2 in thick 6ft foam pipe insulation (about R2 insul value), foil backed fiberglass pipe insulation (R6 insul value), and then waterproofed with an outer sheath of reflectix and zip ties from lowe's and have had no issues down to 18 degrees with lower wind chills (installed on the fresh water hose, pressure regulator, and water in line filter from spigot post to camper and also wrapped the spigot for good measure). Our rig is 4 season/ belly insulation and sheet metal bottom no skirt. **Invest in the two way hose splitter off the spigot, add quick disconnects, then a "Freeze Miser" or similar product** It will automatically open and drip before it reaches freezing temps to prevent the water line from freezing. Easy to unbox, easy to install (like a regular hose), Only After testing for leaking or defects plug into appropriate safe and rated outlet. Not super heavy (25ft). Keeps a semi coiled memory after unboxing but seems to relax and become somewhat flexible. Nice color. Looks quality at first glance (even though several reviewers like us have had defective units).

Highly recommended
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 25-Foot
I’ve been using this hose for several years now. Plug it in and it heats the hose whenever the temperature drops to 40 or less. My hose has made it through several freezes and works 24/7 with no problems. I will buy another when the times comes.

BOUGHT 2 AND BOTH TERRIBLE
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 50-Foot, Style: -20-Degree, Size: 50-Foot
I bought two of these products 6 months apart from each other (march 2024 and October 2024) both brand new out of the box leaked from this hose connection fitting and is not fixable by replacing the standard hose gasket. Thought maybe it was just the first one was just a dud. It was not, the 2nd one was exactly the same and leaked out of BOTH connection fittings aswell. Yes i tried new gaskets, thread tape / dope, trying to tighten it a bit more, pressure reducer down to abt 35 psi. None of which worked. This product has potential of being good but they used such a low quality connection that it ruins the whole thing. Havent gotten to the point where Ive used it below freezing for more than 1 night so I cant comment on the freeze proofness of it. Tested it with an electrical meter and it uses 690W when plugged in and below the temp rating. I ended up having to repair the hose myself because I couldnt order a chinese brand one instead without running out of time before freezing temps (photographed repair of what is necessary for this to funtion propertly out of the box) but for the price point this hose is at I expect it to last at least 2 years without issues at least, I especially DO NOT expect it to leak being brand new out of the box. If you are going to do the repair you have to carefully cut the insulated sleeve back a few inches without cutting the hose or heated wire and then cut the original hose connector off. At that point you can use pretty much any hose repair threaded connector with a hefty hose clamp nice and tight (dont strip the hose clamp threads though). After spending another 15 min on the repair and $10 in parts you will then have a functional hose for at least 1 week. We'll see how long it lasts now.
