Anthurium Velvet Mask
Anthurium forgetii × Anthurium papillilaminum
A cross known among collectors as 'Velvet Mask' — a name that captures precisely what the hybrid is chasing: the completely smooth, uninterrupted, lobelessly rounded leaf outline of Anthurium forgetii, that defining closed sinus that makes forgetii and its hybrids so immediately recognizable, expressed on the thick, muscular, densely velvety leaf body of Anthurium papillilaminum, the celebrated Panamanian understory species with its papillose-velvety suede surface, characteristic ribbed and winged petioles, and deep mahogany to reddish-brown emergent coloration. The forgetii parent contributes the closed sinus, the iridescent dark green coloration, and the subtle, minimal venation that gives forgetii-lineage plants their characteristically quiet, atmospheric aesthetic — no high-contrast silver vein drama, just a dark, softly glittering, undivided leaf surface. The papillilaminum parent contributes the velvet constitution, the muscular leaf thickness, the ribbed petioles, and the rich mahogany new growth that both parents share — making emergent coloration on the most prized seedlings a deep, saturated reddish-brown of exceptional intensity. Individual seedling expression varies considerably — the collector prize being offspring that successfully express both the closed or nearly closed sinus of forgetii and the maximum velvet thickness and leaf substance of papillilaminum simultaneously, a combination that produces a leaf of singular presence and refinement.
-
Light: Lower light than most velvet anthuriums — both parents are genuine understory species; 150-300 fc indirect light supports the deepest iridescent coloration. Avoid high-intensity exposure.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage and root aeration essential. Never waterlog.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 70-80%+ is essential for the velvet surface quality and cleanest leaf emergence from both parent lineages.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow only the top inch to approach dryness between waterings. Never allow to dry out fully; never waterlog.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer supplemented with calcium every 4-6 weeks during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
