Herb Description
The plant Achillea millefolium, commonly known as yarrow, has been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. Its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties have made it a valuable herb in treating various ailments. The herb was named after the Greek hero Achilles, who is said to have used it to heal and strengthen his soldiers' wounds. It was also referred to as "herbal militaris" due to its use on the battlefield. Native Americans also held the herb in high regard and used it to treat toothaches, earaches, cuts, bruises, burns, and more, calling it "life medicine." Apart from these traditional uses, Achillea millefolium has been used to cure colds, respiratory infections, inflammation, and eczema. It is interesting to note that salicylic acid, an ingredient in Aspirin, is extracted from the plant. Additionally, drinking yarrow tea has been found to alleviate allergy symptoms.
Although it can be used as a culinary herb, cooking may bring out its bitterness. Fresh leaves pair well with fruit or can be finely chopped for salads.
Yarrow Plants
The most beneficial part of the Achillea, 'Yarrow' plant for medicinal purposes, is its flowering heads, with the Millefolium variety being the most potent. It is an excellent companion plant that not only improves the health of neighboring plants but also repels unwanted pests and attracts predatory insects that feed on larvae.CAUTION: Should not be ingested by pregnant women or children
