Rainbow Leucothoe (Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Rainbow')

Rainbow Leucothoe is a colorful evergreen shrub that brings season-long foliage interest to shaded and lightly shaded landscapes. Its leaves shift through shades of cream, green, pink, bronze, burgundy, and red, making it especially useful where you want a shrub that contributes much more than a single bloom season. This variety fits beautifully into foundation beds, woodland borders, and mixed shrub plantings where stronger foliage color can act as a focal point. In the right setting, it adds texture, evergreen structure, and year-round garden value.

Distinctive Features

Rainbow Leucothoe is prized for its variegated evergreen foliage, red stems, and gracefully arching habit. New growth often emerges mottled with pink, bronze, and cream tones, matures to deep green marked with creamy white variegation, and then develops richer burgundy, bronze, and red shades in cooler weather. Small drooping clusters of white bell-shaped flowers appear in spring along the stems, adding a softer bloom display above the foliage. It typically matures to about 3 to 5 feet tall and about as wide, forming a broad arching evergreen shrub with strong multi-season appeal. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Plant in part shade for the best foliage quality and overall performance, though some sun is tolerated if the soil stays consistently moist. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
  • Soil: Grow in moist, well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter for the best health and foliage color. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
  • Water: Provide regular moisture during establishment and maintain even moisture, especially in warmer weather. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}
  • Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}
  • Habit: Expect a broad, arching, evergreen shrub with multi-stemmed branching and a naturally graceful form. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}

Ideal Uses

  • Foundation Planting: Use it in shaded or lightly shaded foundation beds where its colorful foliage can provide year-round structure and interest.
  • Focal Point: Place it in a visible bed or mixed border where the cream, pink, bronze, and burgundy foliage can create a strong seasonal highlight.
  • Woodland Gardens: Add it to woodland-style plantings where its arching evergreen habit and spring flowers can lighten darker companions.
  • Mass Planting: Plant it in groups where repeated foliage color can create a broader sweep of evergreen texture and contrast.
  • Hedge or Groundcover Effect: Use it where its arching habit can form a low evergreen screen or a broad shrub layer in the landscape. :contentReference[oaicite:6]{index=6}

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing seasons to support establishment and maintain the best foliage quality.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and help maintain the acidic soil conditions it prefers.
  • Pruning: Prune only as needed to remove damaged branches or lightly shape the plant, since its natural habit is already attractive.
  • Placement: Avoid hot dry sites and alkaline soils, since both can reduce vigor and foliage quality.
  • Maintenance: Heavy pruning is not usually necessary, which helps keep long-term care simple. :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7}

Why Choose Rainbow Leucothoe?

  • Colorful Evergreen Foliage: Cream, green, pink, bronze, burgundy, and red tones keep the shrub ornamental through every season.
  • Shade Garden Value: It performs well in part shade, where many colorful shrubs lose quality or struggle.
  • Graceful Habit: Its arching branches give it a softer and more natural look than many formal evergreen shrubs.
  • Spring Flower Interest: White bell-shaped blooms add a gentle seasonal display without overpowering the planting.
  • Year-Round Structure: Its evergreen habit helps keep the landscape looking full and layered in every season. :contentReference[oaicite:8]{index=8}

Rainbow Leucothoe is an excellent choice for gardeners who want a colorful evergreen shrub with dependable year-round presence and a softer woodland character. Its shifting foliage tones make shaded spaces feel brighter and more intentional, while its manageable size keeps it easy to place in many kinds of planting designs. In foundation beds, woodland borders, and mixed shrub plantings, it offers lasting ornamental value well beyond bloom season.

Ya Just Gotta Have One
Size: 7.2 Surround + 3 HDMI
This is a must-have for in-wall wiring of your surround. I chose this one because I installed a 7.2 system with gold-plated jacks and it worked out great. You can get almost any combination of HDMI, subs/surrounds that you need (5.1, 5.2, 7.1, 7.2 etc). Do your planning on location and wire-routing; get good quality speaker wire and HDMI (high-speed with Audio Return Channel); get the remod-style mounting bracket/box then cut your hole at the same height/level as your electrical outlets and preferably between the same studs as your TV's wire-box so your HDMIs just run straight up to the TV (remember to install the bracket BEFORE you run your wires). When connecting the wires to these terminals, it's best to have 10 to 12 inches of wire coming out of the wall because you need space for your hands to manipulate the wires and nuts on the terminals. If you have a basement with access to the floor below the mounting location, it's best to drill 4 half-inch holes straight up through the bottom plate of the wall and feed your wires up those holes. Tip: If your TV and Surround Receiver are fully compatible you really only need 1 HDMI port on the wall plate, because you can plug your devices into the receiver and just sent the A/V/data to the TV while the audio is returned over the same HDMI.
