In 2023, our work team visited Aprovecho Research Center in Oregon to carry out tests on our Dos Por Tres stove, measuring its performance in energy efficiency and heat transfer and identifying possible points for improvement. Aprovecho is the preeminent test laboratory for cookstoves in the world and pioneered the “rocket elbow” where cookstoves gain tremendous efficiencies in wood use.

This was the second trip to Aprovecho for Professor Elder Mendoza, Director of Operations in Honduras, who had visited in 2010 to learn how the Dos Por Tres stove worked and to be trained on aspects of efficiency. 10 years later, he was back, along with four other Mirador staff, all in search of continuous improvements to the stove to benefit our 300,000 stove users.

As a result of that visit, Proyecto Mirador has partnered with Aprovecho to build an on-site stove testing laboratory at our headquarters in Honduras, equipped with LEMS technology so that we can continue to test and improve our stove model.

“There is no way to control something, but you can measure it. It was incredible to measure the performance of our Dos Por Tres stove with a scientific and specialized team. Being able to learn from stove experts like Dean Still, Nordica McCarthy and their team and see the passion with which they carry out their work motivates us. We need this type of collaboration to improve the quality of our project, and we thank each of the team members for their effort and dedication.”

Ing. Rafael Mendoza, Director of International Operations
